The vision for the Gathering of Nations web site began in 1993 when the reality of the impact of the world wide web was realized. The Gathering of Nations decided that the internet could be a great resource for Natived American Indians to connect to other Native and non-Native people world wide to learn about Native American culture and tradition.
In short, the goals of the Gathering of Nations organization to promote Native American Indian culture and dispel stereotypes created about indigenous peoples.
For example, we provide a live web cast of the Gathering of Nations PowWow
(provided by
www.Powwows.com) for those who are unable to attend
and we make the
continuous effort to
take as many photographs
about the entire event
and post information in
a timely and efficient
manner to extended on a
much larger and further
reaching scale on the
internet.

Gathering of Nations
Organization |
 |
It is our pleasure
to welcome everyone to the
Gathering of Nations. It has been said by many that the
Gathering of
Nations PowWow is the Mecca of Indian Country;
while others have said
"There is a magic about the
"Gathering".
The concept for the
Gathering of
Nations PowWow
came about in 1982,
after Derek Mathews
discovered cheating and
contest rigging at the
National Finals Powwow.
He was able to prove his
discovery at the end of
the event, which
resulted in the bogus
powwow committee having
to pay prize money out
for a second time. The
second payment was to
the true and legitimate
winners. It was from
that event that Derek
Mathews decided to
produce a contest powwow
which would be conducted
in a fair and ethical
way.
This was the birth of
the Gathering of Nations
Powwow. Since that time
The annual
Gathering of
Nations PowWow
has been promoted as a
FAIR CONTEST to all
dancers and singers for
over 29 years. The
Gathering of Nations
continues to respect the
powwow traditions of the
past while capturing the
new trends of the
present. We welcome all
dancers and singers to
participate regardless
of tribal affiliation or
geographical location.
The ability to sing and
dance is a gift from the
creator and it is not
our place to determine
who is allowed to
participate.
Each year
strenuous and endless
efforts are made by the
Mathews family (Derek,
Lita, and Melonie) and
the GON Staff to
guarantee the powwow is
judged as fairly as
humanly possible. The
Gathering of Nations
Powwow is the annual
premiere event in all of
Indian Country and is
know as North America's
Biggest PowWow!
